Oh, I forgot to mention one of the best puzzles yet. Clues: it’s not really a math puzzle. And, even if I use my Russian dictionary, I couldn’t translate this puzzle back into Russian. And most of the Russian speakers, even those fairly fluent in English, couldn’t translate it from Russian to English: only the one who lived for a number of years in the US was able to.
The puzzle is to figure out what number goes with each word.
Oh, another clue: there’s some disagreement about some of the numbers, and it may well depend on whether you’re from the US or UK, or even on regional differences within the US perhaps?
OK, here goes:
Cat is 4
Dog could be lots of things, but most commonly 4.
Cow is definitely 3.
Duck is 5
Pig is 4
Donkey is 6
Horse is 5
Sheep is 3
Question: what is rooster?
Feel free to ask for clues, too! I’m still disappointed not to have
gotten any emails about solutions to the other puzzles (the mosaic from
the cafeteria of the MCCME, for example?)
Josh,
I finally found the piece of paper on which you wrote the url. THis bog is amazing. I am excited to talk to you more about your trip. It sounds like you have a lot of ideas to share about how you can take your experience and help shape the US math circle and curriculum. I'm still thinking about that tile picture and the significance. Also, I was wondering if I could have the email of one of the 9th graders who can help me with my real analysis homework next semester. Unbelievable!
Thanks for sharing all of your thoughts. I definitely enjoyed reading the blog.
Chau,
Ned
